Here is a historical time line of satellite signals. The early 90's was the beginning of MPEG-2 satellite reception. This process started in Asisa and the Pacific Rim. MPEG-2 was capable of receiving 10 TV channels with one signal. This was a dramatic move towards satellite TV. The problem was the dishes needed to get these signals were very large and you needed one per TV set. This was very costly and inconvinent. It meant huge dishes installed outside your house. It was also not available to the regular guy.
Next , in about the mid 90's dishes were made smaller, more compact and the MPEG-2 had been improved to receive many more channels. This transformation of the satellite signal process was now becoming more affordable and obtainable by the average consumer. Opening the market up to so many more customers. This service moved from Europe to North America. As this invention became world wide, Free to Air became a well known alternative to regular cable.
